Kinesiology and canine wellness
About the author: Fanny Lacroix is a kinesiologist specialising in animals working in the Western Cape. She qualified as a Canine and Equine Kinesiologist through the Specialised Kinesiology College of South Africa. As a result, she works mostly with dogs and horses, but so far, her clients have also included a cat and a parrot. She is keen to adapt her skills and knowledge to help other species. Fanny is also a human kinesiologist and is available to work with the animals’ owners if necessary, as addressing any potential stress within the human family unit will greatly contribute to promoting the animal’s well-being and happiness, as well as to enhancing the animal-owner relationship. How stress affects your dog’s wellness
All bodies are wonderfully well equipped to heal themselves. However, prolonged, unresolved stress interferes with the natural healing process. Indeed, the body can only repair itself efficiently when it is in a state of relaxation. Stress control is therefore paramount to promote health and well-being. In man’s best friend ̶ as well as in other animals, humans included ̶ , unresolved stress (nutritional or environmental stress, past traumas, emotional issues within the “pack” or family unit, etc.) may manifest as physical and/or behavioural issues.
Kinesiology helps your dog release the stress that is locked in its cells, thus restoring the body’s innate self-repair abilities. Kinesiology is a form of natural therapy in which Eastern wisdom combines with Western knowledge to bring you balance at all levels. It recognizes the importance not only of the body, but also of the mind, the emotions and the spirit when it comes to health. It relies on muscle testing to communicate with your canine companion’s body and to identify and correct potential imbalances in the body’s structural, chemical, mental and emotional energy systems, as well as the external factors that may be affecting your dog’s health and well-being.
Since it forms part of the energetic model, and not of the medical model, kinesiology does not treat named diseases, but rather looks for and corrects the underlying issues that have led to the ailment (like nutritional or environmental stressors in the case of allergies, for instance). Among the issues that kinesiology can help solve are nutritional stress, allergies, negative emotional components, pain, the integration of muscle groups, mental and physical coordination and post-surgery recovery, to name but a few.
What to expect from a Kinesiology session
First of all, the kinesiologist takes a detailed history of the problem. He/she then carries out the muscle-testing part of the session on a surrogate, i.e. a person who "stands in" for the animal. This person is often the owner, as it is recommended that a strong bond exists between the animal and the surrogate. The relevant corrections are done on the animal's body. As the surrogate, you may feel extremely attuned to the animal’s emotions or reactions. As a result, a Kinesiology session can be a beautiful way to enhance the pet-owner relationship.
Is Kinesiology safe for pets?
Kinesiology is a gentle, safe and non-invasive technique. Animals tend to appear extremely relaxed during a session, and many fall asleep a few minutes after the session has started. In cases where pain is the issue at hand, the kinesiologist will be very attentive to not cause your pet any discomfort when performing a correction involving firm physical contact, like the stimulation of neuro-lymphatic points. The detailed history taken at the beginning of the session will allow the kinesiologist to know which parts of the animal’s body should be touched with care.
