XYLITOL CAN BE FATAL TO DOGS
Lori Karnecki

Hi I'd like to share a story about my Dog who died recently from xylitol poisoning in case youd like to use it in your next newsletter ... I want to share this story in the hope of making people more aware of how toxic xylitol is for dogs. Our dog, Ranger, died this morning from liver failure because he ate a plate of biscuits which were meant for us. He pulled the plate down off the kiddies table. I had made them with xylitol instead of sugar as I had run out of sugar. Xylitol in humans releases slowly, but in dogs it releases quickly into the bloodstream. It can cause hypoglycaemia, high insulin levels and eventually ends in liver failure. There is not much that can be done to help, most dogs die. If they ingest 2 sticks of xylitol chewing gum they can die. It can take effect within 30 minutes. was 3 and a half years old strong miniature Schnuazer, he was an amazing, loving, precious soul and very much a part of our family. We miss him very much. I am really devastated that I could do nothing to help him. I tried homeopathy, herbs and allopathic medicine, he was hospitalised, on a drip for just under a week, but he just had too much xylitol in his system. http://vetmedicine.about.com/od/toxicology/qt/xylitol_tox.htm
