ABOUT HUSKY RESCUE

Husky Rescue Southern Africa is a non-profit organisation that specialises in the rescue and re-homing of huskies and other Nordic breeds of dogs.

With the popularity of the Siberian, Malamute and other Nordic breeds increasing over the last couple of years we have found a dramatic increase in the number of lost and abandoned dogs.
Families have seen movies like Balto and Eight Below and dog lovers are captured by the beautiful white coats and gorgeous blue eyes and puppies were purchased by the dozen.

An increase in demand results in an increase of supply and as a result irresponsible backyard breeders have flooded neighbourhoods with puppies without educating people on the very specific needs of these breeds of dogs.
Families have found themselves unable or unwilling to accommodate the needs of the dogs and dogs are found roaming the streets, abandoned or even worse; abused. Hence the need for an organisation like ours

It has become evident that people are ill-informed and ignorant to the very specific needs of the breed.
To compound the issue of ignorance, back-yard breeding has increased the number of husky puppies available to the public and husky owners are purchasing pets with bad bloodlines and genetic defects.
Husky Rescue SA has developed a rescue program to accommodate these unwanted, abandoned and very often abused dogs.

What are the criteria looked at when evaluating for  a prospective adopter?

  • Prospective owners must be educated on the breed & must understand that it is a lifetime commitment.
  • Owners must preferably be active to take the Husky for walks & runs.
  • New owners must want to adopt for the right reasons i.e for their characteristics, and not their looks.
  • The prospective owner must be willing to change their lifestyle to accommodate the breed & must be willing to make changes to their property to keep a Husky safe.
  • Perimeter fences/walls must be at least 1,8m high.
  • Due to the fact that most Huskies are escape artists, the property must be divided & there must be at least 2 gates before the husky can exit the property.
  • We do not place single dogs, they must have a friend.
  • Huskies must have indoor access due to their dependance on human contact.
  • Puppies are only placed in homes where there is an adult animal available.

Describe the ideal owner and environment for your breed.
Huskies need a lot of exercise and outdoor space, which is why we advise that the new owners join Sled Dogs Unlimited (SDU).
The new owner is required to sign a legal binding contract ensuring that the animal is always kept in a good condition & is provided with food, water & medical treatment. At any point if the new owner decides to surrender the animal, it must be returned to Husky Rescue.
