CJ Puppy Playgroup
Ruimsig, Poortview, Muldersdrift, Honeydew, Mogale City
Jo Ewart Smith and Celia Torr , offer this playgroup, sometimes with the help of trainee trainers.
All puppies from 12 weeks old are welcome to join as long as they have had all the relevant inoculations for their age.
But, be warned, if you don’t want to have fun with your pup don’t join this group!
The main aim of the play group is to offer a safe, fun experience for puppies so they learn to play with each other and develop confidence in the big world of other dogs and people. In the course of play we show handlers how best to manage their puppies so they grow into happy, well mannered dogs.
We only teach and encourage handling methods that rely on rewarding the behaviour that we want from our dogs, such as, running to us the moment we call them. In this way puppies learn to want to do what we ask of them instead of resenting being forced to do what we want. It’s much more fun for everyone! Puppies wear soft collars (no chains) and handlers are asked to bring suitable food rewards and a toy with them.
Jo and Celia have had twenty years experience with dogs and puppies and both work our own dogs to competition level.
Here is a list of what we offer:
How to understand natural dog behaviour
House training
Basic obedience (sit, down, stand), come when called, pay attention to the handler, walk with the handler without pulling and to stay down when left for a short time.
Off lead socialisation
Advice on feeding and basic health care (control of ticks and fleas, worming)
Preparation for visits to the vet
How to handle nervous frightened pups (and adult dogs)
How to deal with basic behaviour problems and separation anxiety
