General
This is not yet a popular dog in SA, although breeding programs have been put in place. The name Border Terrier, originates from them coming form the 'border' area between England and Scotland. They were bred from both the Dandie Dimont and Bedlington Terriers and first registered as a breed in 1920 by the British Kennel Club.
They were bred to help with foxhunting, driving the foxes out of their den's and into the open, so that the hounds could give chase. Due to this they are very indiependent dogs, being used to work on their own.
Like most terriers, this little guy is very high energy, they adore their families and being loved.
If you are looking for a watch dog this little guy is not for you. They are very friendly and love people and being around them.
They are one of the Hypoallergenic breeds, so a good match for anybody with allergies.

Is this the right dog for you?
These little guys need a firm hand as they can be rather otherwise and stubborn. Early socialization, positive reinforcement, mental stimulation and training is the key to a well behaved Border Terrier.
They are high energy and need mental and physical stimulation. They can become bored and happily chew up and destroy soft toys and the like, so ensure you have correct chew toys such as Kongs and Squirrel Dudes and keep them stuffed and on hand.
They do not do well with living alone and can become destructive and also develop separation anxiety, and being bred for digging, this can pose a problem, and a good idea to supply a digging pit which is kept well stocked.
Should you have 2 of the same, or 2 pups together?
On average the Border Terrier does not tend to be aggressive to other dogs, however you must make sure that your dog has been well socialized so that it will accept another dog into the home.
When it comes to which sex get on better, your best bet is one male and one female (both sterilized), or 2 males together. Never two females. The vast majority of the time two females will get on well until about 8 - 9 months of age and thenm fighting for position tends to occur. When males have the odd altercation, it tends to be over quickly, but with females, it just intensifies and often the only solution is for one of the females to be rehomes. This is not just for this breed, but in general.
Having two pups from same litter is not a good idea. Most people think that the pups will be happier with a playmate and won’t fight if they are family. The truth of the matter is that your two pups are likely to:
Bond with each other to the exclusion of you

Bond with each other to the exclusion of you
- Will stress without the other dog being around
- Fight with each other
- Be more destructive and boisterous
- Two pups together often leads to one being more assertive and the other more submissive. This could well end up in a situation where the more submissive dog will never develop its full potential.
- Mature later
Do they get on with other dogs?
As long as they have received early socializing as a pup, on average they get on well with other dogs.

.If you have smaller animals in the house, you must introduce your Border Terrier into the mix early so its hunting instincts don’t take over.

Are they good with children?
They love children, and on average, get on well with them and will play with them for hours. However, they are high energy and can be a bit rough, so do better with children about 6- 7 years and older. Remember that dogs and children should always be supervised.

Health
Overall, they are generally healthy and this is due in part, to responsible, breeding where the correct screening process has been undertaken. They can be prone to heart defects, seizures, luxating patella, undescended testicles, hypothryoidism and malocclusions.
“In today’s age, with the rising cost of veterinary care, it really is a wise decision to consider medical insurance for your pets. Depending on the plan you choose, you can ensure that if your pet does develop one of the health issues the breed is prone too, that you will be covered –additionally, just knowing that any accident your pet may have will be covered, will out-weigh the monthly insurance fee for most pet owners. Our own personal choice is Genricpet as they have a ‘no limit’ policy and their rates are comparable to the rest of the industry.
