Behaviour Advice for Adopted Dogs - Online Assistance - Meet Scotty Above
Scotty Valadao - Qualified Canine Behaviourist - TTouch Practitioner - Founder Friends of the Dog Obedience and Puppy Instructor - Clicker Instructor
My passion is working with dogs, especially those that have been adopted from shelters, and those with fear issues. So many problems can be both prevented, and changed, if you just get the help and guidance you need. If you don't attend to any concerns, they unfortunately do tend to increase and other behaviour concerns can develop.
I commend and thank you for giving a shelter dog a home, and really look forward to us working together to turn your new addition into a well balanced, well behaved member of the family.
Additionally, if you have just adopted, this is an ideal session for you. When we bring a new dog into our homes, we have a period that is called the Honeymoon Period. This is when any behaviours that may be of possible concern, are either not seen at all, or in very low intensity. As the dog becomes more secure in its environment, then its more natural behaviour tends to start occurring - a bit like a child being well behaved when visiting a new place and meeting new people, and comes home and reverts to normal behaviour! This period last approximately 3 weeks, but in some dogs can be in place for 3 to 6 months. This is the ideal time to lay down a solid foundation of what we call Paw Manners, and will go a long way to preventing future behaviour concerns.
Over the last 2 years we have had countless on-line behaviour sessions, due to the Covid 19 restrictions, and I would now like to offer this facility to you, so that I can help even more dogs and owners. I only work with force-free methods.
I offer assistance for all behaviour concerns, but where aggression is concerned, can only help you with on-lead aggression towards other dogs. Aggression is a behaviour concern that must be dealt with in person, as it is crucial to observe the dog's body language and its interaction with the other dog/s in the home, as well as it's interaction with its owner.

HOW OUR SESSION WORKS
Price
R500 - Should you like to book a session, please contact me at [email protected]
If you have adopted within the last 2 months, then a donation of R30 is made to the shelter you adopted from on your behalf.
Step 1
After payment, we have a chat by either What's App or Zoom, where you give me a summary of the problems you are experiencing with your dog - what you would like to achieve, and we get to meet one another. You are also welcome to send me videos of the behaviour/s you are concerned about.
Step 2
I send you a detailed Questionnaire to complete. This is very comprehensive and gives me a good understanding as to why the behaviour may be occurring, the current relationship with your dog, any factors that may be inadvertently reinforcing the behaviour, and potential problems that may develop. Even if no behaviour problems and you are just going to use the session to put in place solid foundations for a well behaved dog, the Questionnaire still gives me vital information.
Step 3
I may well have questions for you after viewing your questionnaire, and in this case, we correspond either by email, or by the options in Step 1.
Step 4
I put together a detailed behaviour program, designed specifically for your needs, for you to follow which is done in sections, and you will have access to the steps involved via a private link, through You Tube - you will be sent the links.
The modifications you will be given will be easy to understand and follow. I will also supply you all the 'do's and don'ts' as well as explain to you why we are doing the things we are going to be doing - being aware why, will give you a deeper understanding of your dog and dog behaviour, and give you tools for the future.
After you have watched your video on the modifications to be done,, we have another Zoom or session to go over what you have been given, and for me to answer any questions or queries you may have.
Final Step
I am available to you by email for the next 4 weeks at no additional charge, to help and guide you through the process of making the changes. Changing behaviour, or bringing in new ways of working with your dog will take practice, patience and total consistency - not to be consistent, will only confuse your dog and very possible result in any inappropriate behaviour reoccurring - in behaviour there are no magic wands!
