The majority of dogs love a good scratch in the sacrum area and apart from this experience being enjoyable for the dog – it is actually helping them – they know more than we do!
The area in the hindquarters, on the midline of the sacrum (where it feels flat between the hips) is known as the Bai Hui point in acupressure. Other names are ‘The Point of 100 Meetings’, or ‘Heaven’s Gate’. The explanation I like the most for the name Heaven’s Gate – “it is when the dog’s sacrum is the closest to heaven when eating – and that is when he is in heaven!”
Working gently in this area helps with distributing energy along the spine and hind legs and helps to strengthen same, so is very beneficial for dogs with hindquarter issues. It also helps to regulate the emotions. You could do TTouch in this area, or move the skin back and forward and side to side gently with your palm flat on this area - a gentle scratch, or even just hold your hand over the area with gentle pressure. The Bui Hui area is also known to regulate the emotions, so working here will help to calm a dog.
In TTouch we have many other methods that will help dogs with hindquarter issues and at the same time, help to balance the rest of the body.
