The Potcake is a type of dog rather than a strict breed, however, The Bahama’s Kennel Club does recognize the Potcake as a breed. The Potcake is a mixed-heritage, hardy, and loving dog found throughout the Caribbean, especially on islands like the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and Jamaica. The name Potcake comes from local island culture: stray dogs were traditionally fed the leftover “pot cake” (the thick layer at the bottom of a cooking pot), and over time the name stuck to these community dogs.
What They’re Like
Potcakes are medium-sized, athletic dogs with short coats that come in many colors and patterns. Their exact appearance varies because they aren’t a standardized breed — their genetics reflect a blend of breeds brought to the Caribbean over centuries, including hounds, shepherd types, and sometimes even terriers.
They’re known for:
Potcakes tend to be friendly, alert, and playful. Because many start life as strays, early socialization is important, but when given love and structure they form strong bonds and can be excellent family dogs. They are often described as confident and eager to please.
Why They Matter
Beyond being great companions, Potcakes symbolize animal resilience and community spirit in the Caribbean. Many are now adopted internationally through rescue programs that celebrate their unique heritage and qualities.
In short: Potcakes are smart, loving, versatile dogs with big hearts — a true testament to the joys of mixed-breed companions.
